Bwahahahaha! By now, you’re no doubt aware that Horror Week is in full swing (and if you’re not, well, we don’t love you, either. So there!). I spent a great deal of time considering what horrific Foursaken Feature to unleash on the unsuspecting fourth edition world, and determined that the only reasonable answer was some kind of monster (let’s just say that taint and madness were never really in the running).
But then the question became which monster. It had to be special. After all, this is Horror Week, of all weeks. The monster would need to be suitably…well…horrific. And then it struck me: why not just use Horrors?
For those of you scratching your heads and wondering what I’m talking about, the answer lies in my love of Magic: the Gathering. Each creature in Magic has one or more creature types, describing what the creature is, and occasionally mattering mechanically. Horrors are one of the old catch-all creature types for scary black creatures that didn’t have a better creature type to call home (they briefly had a stint as the stand-in for “Demon,” but that’s a whole other story, and, frankly, has virtually nothing to do with the point of this article).
So, what did I do? I took a bunch of Horrors from Magic’s past and turned them into monsters for 4th edition. May they give your players nightmares.
