Cooking With Magic

October 8th, 2010

From the Workshop Archive

Welcome again to From the Workshop, where we showcase a bevy of new magic items, monsters and even alternate class features. This week I’m cooking up a few recipes I found in a cookbook I purchased from Sebastian Dranko’s Emporium of Magical Goods*.  I’ve also included a few quotes from Sebastion.

In most cases it doesn’t take as long to create quasi-magical meals and drinks as it would to create a magic item of the same price. Magical meals such as fire breath chili and ghost roast require 1 hour of preparation and cooking per 1,000 gp in the item's base price (or fraction thereof), with a minimum of at least 2 hours. Magical drinks that are alcoholic in nature usually require a greater amount of time to create; in the case of beers, this is because the distilled magic and exotic ingredients have to be added in with the hops toward the beginning of the brewing process.

Creating a magic beer requires about 1 hour of preparation per 1,000 gp in the item's base price (or fraction thereof) with a minimum of at least 2 hours, and also requires about 1 month for fermentation. If you don’t care about ruining the flavor and drinkability of the beer, you can just infuse an existing beer with the distilled magic and exotic ingredients. This requires 1 hour per 1,000 gp in the item’s base price, with a minimum of at least 1 hour. Those who drink a magical beer created in this fashion have to make a Fortitude save DC 12 + spell level of the distilled magic or be sickened for 1d4+1 rounds.

If you like these magic meals and want to see more of them made, speak up, either in the forum or via e-mail.

Berserker’s Brew
Aura faint transmutation; CL
Slot —; Price 800 gp for one tankard; Weight
 DESCRIPTION
This strong dwarven stout smells faintly of iron and also has a faint metallic aftertaste. Drinking a tankard of berserker’s brew is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity and sends its consumer into a frenzy. When consumed by a creature that doesn’t have the barbarian rage ability or a similar ability, it bestows a +2 morale bonus to Strength, 1d10+5 temporary hit points, and a -1 penalty to AC for 1 minute. These temporary hit points go away when the rage ends. To end this rage prematurely you must succeed on a Will save DC 14. The effect is otherwise identical with a barbarian's rage except that the subject isn't fatigued at the end of the rage. When consumed by a creature with the barbarian rage ability or similar ability who still has rounds of rage remaining, the drink causes him to immediately enter his rage; the first 1d4+1 rounds of this rage don’t count against his total rounds of rage, and he gains 1d10+5 temporary hit points. These temporary hit points go away when the rage ends.
 CONSTRUCTION
Exotic Ingredients distilled essence of a rage spell and a pint of blood taken from a raging humanoid; Requirements Craft (alchemy) 5 ranks or Profession (brewer) 7 ranks; Craft DC 15; Cost 400 gp for one tankard

~ No self-respecting barbarian goes into battle sober.

Fire Breath Chili
Aura moderate evocation; CL
Slot —; Price 1,650 gp for one serving; Weight 1 lb.
 DESCRIPTION
This bowl of chili bubbles, releasing tiny gouts of flame and bestows upon the consumer the ability to belch cones of fire. He can belch fire up to three times, each time dealing 4d6 points of fire damage to all targets in a 15-foot cone originating from the consumer. The victims can attempt a DC 14 Reflex save for half damage. As long as the consumer still has at least one unused blast of fire, he or she has 5 fire resistance. Unused blasts of fire dissipate 1 hour after the chili is consumed. It usually takes about 1d6+1 minutes to eat one serving of fire breath chili. It is possible to eat one serving as a full-round action that provokes attacks of opportunity, though you lose much of the chili’s potency due to the fact that much of the chili went flying everywhere when you scarfed it down. Decrease the number of fire blasts down to one, and this blast will now dissipate 1d4 minutes after the chili is consumed.
 CONSTRUCTION
Exotic Ingredients distilled essence of a fireball spell and the fire glands of a dragon; Requirements Craft (alchemy) 5 ranks or Profession (cook) 7 ranks; Craft DC 20; Cost 825 gp for one serving

~ Now that’s what I call five-alarm!

Ghost Roast
Aura strong transmutation; CL
Slot —; Price 20,000 gp for one roast; Weight
 DESCRIPTION
This roast dire boar looks and smells delicious, except for the fact that you can see right through it. The first ghost roast was created by the ghost of a great chef who wasn’t about to let a little thing like death keep him from doing what he loves. You need to have magic or ghost touch cutlery to be able to eat a ghost roast. One roast can feed up to five creatures and, after eating their serving, each of these creatures becomes incorporeal for 1d6 hours. If more than five creatures partake of the ghost roast, only the first five will be affected.  Eating one serving of ghost roast typically takes around 2d8+4 minutes. Any carried gear also becomes incorporeal.
Ghost touch cutlery usually costs 500 gp each.
 CONSTRUCTION
Exotic Ingredients distilled essence of an etherealness spell and the intact remains of a dire animal, typically a dire boar; Requirements Craft (alchemy) 8 ranks or Profession (cook) 10 ranks and the creator must be incorporeal; Craft DC 25; Cost 10,000 gp for one roast

~ Don’t even get me started about all those empty calories.

Reveler’s Delight
Aura faint transmutation; CL
Slot —; Price 500 gp for one tankard; Weight
 DESCRIPTION
This fairly weak ale has an airy smell to it, tastes faintly of pineapple, and causes you to feel a little light-headed. Reveler’s delight was first created by the owner of the Soaring Drake tavern to solve his problem of losing customers to a fall from the second-story balcony. Drinking a tankard of reveler’s delight is a standard action that provokes attacks of opportunity, and it bestows an effect similar to the effects of a feather fall spell upon the consumer. This effect differs from feather fall in that it can affect any size creature (though it takes an additional tankard per size category above Medium), its duration is 1d4 hours, and the slowed fall effect isn’t ended when you land on the ground.
 CONSTRUCTION
Exotic Ingredients distilled essence of a levitate spell and a flight feather of a griffon; Requirements Craft (alchemy) 4 ranks or Profession (brewer) 6 ranks; Craft DC 15; Cost 250 gp for one tankard

~ Falling off the wagon never felt so good.
