Mythos Monsters

June 10th, 2011

From the Workshop Archive

Welcome again to From the Workshop, where we showcase a bevy of new magic items, monsters and even alternate class features. Since this week is Mythos Week, I thought I would give you a few new monsters based off the mythos monsters.

Rethtylan

This vaguely reptilian humanoid creature is covered in grayish green scales except for its frog-like head; its webbed hands and feet end in wicked looking claws, its reptilian tail is broadened for aquatic life, and several short tendrils protrude from the creature’s back.

Organization solitary, pair, or cult (3–6 plus 6–12 1st-level humanoid cultists)
Treasure NPC Gear

Rethtylans take the form of regular humanoids to gain influence over that creature’s society. They tend to pose as nobles and other royalty.

Winged Horror

This four-winged monstrosity looks like an unholy mixture of many different kinds of winged creatures, with the eyeless head of a dragon, the legs of a wyvern, the wings of a crow, a bat, a dragon, and a gargoyle, and a serpentine tail.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

Blind (Ex): Winged horrors are blind creatures that rely on their other senses to detect their surroundings. They have blindsight instead of darkvision and are immune to gaze attacks, visual effects, illusions, and other attack forms that rely on sight.

Breathless (Ex): Winged horrors do not need to breathe, making them immune to all harmful vapors and gases (such as cloudkill and stinking cloud effects, as well as inhaled poisons). Additionally, winged horrors can survive inside an airless vacuum.

Screech (Su): As a standard action a winged horror can produce an earsplitting screech. Those within 60 feet who hear the screech must succeed on a DC 19 Fortitude save or be deafened for 1 minute.  A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected again by the same winged horror’s screech for 24 hours. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Winged horrors were created to be the servants of a now long-dead god. They are capable of flying in a complete vacuum, though a rider would still need his own protection to survive those conditions.

Skinless One
This horrific looking humanoid creature appears to not have any skin; its muscles and ligaments are all clearly visible.

Skinless One
SPECIAL ABILITIES

Horrifying Appearance (Ex): Due to the skinless one’s appearance, all creatures (except other skinless ones) capable of seeing the skinless one must succeed on a DC 26 Will save or become shaken for as long as they can still see the skinless one. This is a fear effect. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Steal Skin (Su): As a standard action that doesn’t provoke attacks of opportunity, a skinless one may attempt to steal the skin of single humanoid creature within 60 feet. A skinless one can use this ability once every 1d4+1 rounds. Stealing a humanoid’s skin inflicts 20d6 points of damage and the target staggered by the pain; a DC 26 Fortitude save halves the damage and negates the staggered effect. Humanoids slain by this attack are skinned completely, allowing the skinless one to be able to utilize its wear skin ability. The skinless horror gains a temporary enhancement bonus to its Strength score if the target failed its Fortitude save; this enhancement bonus to Strength is equal to 1/10th of the damage inflicted (rounded down) and its lasts for 1 hour.  The save DC is Charisma-based.

This ability can also be used to steal the skin of the recently deceased. Using this ability in this way doesn’t grant a temporary bonus to Strength but does allow the skinless one to use its wear skin ability.

Wear Skin (Su): When a skinless one uses its change shape ability, it can assume the appearance of specific individuals it has skinned with its steal skin ability.

Wicked Claws (Ex): A skinless one applies twice its Strength modifier to claw damage and threatens a critical hit on an 18–20 for x3 with its claw attacks.
