For those of you who don’t know, spring is one of my favorite seasons. Definitely in the top four. To me, spring is all about the following three things: flowers (which I like very much), romance (which everyone likes), and of course baseball (which is, of course, the most important thing about spring, summer, and most of fall). Today’s Obscure Arcana will feature spells tied (loosely in the case of baseball) into each of these three themes. Enjoy.
BLOSSOMING ATTRACTION
School conjuration [emotion, mind-affecting]; Level bard 3, druid 2, ranger 2
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft. /2 levels)
Area 30-ft. radius burst
Duration 10 min./level
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
With soft words and gentle gestures, the ground explodes with color as hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of gorgeous wildflowers erupt in full bloom from the earth, their sweet scent filling the air. This spell may only be cast on natural ground with a hardness of less than 8. The spell’s area immediately fills with beautiful and magical wildflowers that exude a sweet smell which causes fascination and intense infatuation in humanoids. Creatures that enter or begin their turn within the spell’s area must succeed on a Will save or have their attitude towards every other creature within the spell’s area be magically increased by 1 step for the duration of the spell. Additionally, when the spell is cast and once each minute thereafter, all creatures within the area must succeed on an additional Will save or be forced to remain within the spell’s area. Creatures succeed on any of these saving throws immediately end the spell’s effect for that individual creature, and that creature does not need to make further saving throws to resist the spell’s effects. Attacking a creature under the effects of this spell (including casting a hostile spell), automatically ends the spell’s effect.
This spell can be made permanent with a permanency spell (caster level 10th, 5,000 gp). In such a case, creatures that succeed on their saving throw are unaffected for 24 hours, at which point they become susceptible to the spell again.
EMBODY THE SULTAN
School transmutation; Level antipaladin 4, inquisitor 5, magus 5, paladin 4, ranger 4
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S, M/DF (a polished wooden club)
Range personal
Target you
Duration 9 rounds
Sometimes referred to as “embody the caliph,” or in primitive cultures as “soul of Ba’am,” this spell transforms the caster into the greatest embodiment of physical prowess. You vastly increase in power and accuracy, granting you a +6 enhancement bonus on all weapon attack rolls (this does not stack with any enhancement bonus that applies to any weapon you wield), a +20-foot enhancement bonus to your movement speed, and a number of temporary hit points equal to twice your caster level. Additionally, whenever you confirm a critical hit, you deal an additional amount of damage equal to 1d10 times the weapon’s critical multiplier and push the target back 50 feet in a straight line. This movement does not provoke attacks of opportunity. If the target would hit a solid creature or object before he travels 50 feet, his movement ends and both he and the struck creature or object suffer 3d10 points of damage.
PARAMUSE
School enchantment (charm) [mind-affecting); Level bard 5
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, M (a box of sweets and a bouquet of flowers with a combined price of 45 gp)
Range close (25 ft. + 5 ft. /2 levels)
Target one creature
Duration 1 min./level
Saving Throw Will negates; Spell Resistance yes
You offer your flowers and candies and make a bold declaration of love such as to move the gods themselves. The target of this spell falls hopelessly in love with you and serves as your paramour and muse for the spell’s duration. Unless the target succeeds on a Will save, his attitude is improved to helpful and he takes a wild and passionate romantic interest in you, doing his best to gain your affections, through conversation, giving of gifts, and other courtship rituals. Additionally, the target follows you and obeys any non-dangerous requests you give without fail. Finally, so long as the target remains within 10 feet of you, your character level is treated as 4 levels higher for the purposes of any bardic performance ability you possess, and any rounds of bardic performance you perform do not count against the total number of rounds of bardic performance you could normally perform in a day. At the end of the spell’s duration, the target remembers what occurred and may be quite irate with you, though creatures affected by this spell who are treated well by the caster and who have or develop a genuine interest in the caster may not be offended.
